Graduate student pursuing DPhil in Philosophy with minor in cognitive science.   Research area:

      Area of specialization:  Philosophy of mind and philosophy of cognitive science.  Currently dissertating on the role of rationality in psychological explanations of human intuitive judgment and the behavior of nonlinguistic animals.  Secondary interests include the cognitive science of learning, artificial intelligence, animal cognition, the connectionism/ classicism debate, the psychological origins and epistemic status of intuitions, and experimental philosophy

Oral Qualifying Exam passed with permission to immediately submit prospectus to Graduate School on 1/23/2008; Qualifying paper title:  “Rationality and Reason-Based Explanation:  Towards a Theory of Heuristic Rationality.”

Summary of Fijian Projects, Summer 2005

v Volunteer Teacher, Savusavu Secondary School, June 2005-Aug 2005. 

Taught two Form 6 (ages 16-18) computer studies courses, covering unit in computer programming; assisted other teachers with pedagogy, assignment design, and lecture skills.

v Volunteer Teacher, St. Bede’s College, June 2005-Aug 2005. 

Taught three computer studies classes (ages 14-18), covering introductory programming; assisted Peace Corps volunteer Shenan Moisechek with assignment and lesson plan design.

v Other Projects:

o   Repaired and maintained computers at several area schools for Savusavu Rotary Club.

o   Advised Rava Computer Club—arranged agreement to relocate computer donated to Rava Computer Club to Rava Kindergarten building, which allowed Kindergarten instructors use of computer for classes and villagers free access to computer after hours.

o   Designed custom databases to store student records and financial information for Savusavu Secondary School and St. Bede’s College.

o   Taught free adult computer literacy classes at Rava Kindergarten, July 2005-Aug 2005.

Taught four computer studies classes, Forms 6-7 (ages 16-18); topics covered included introductory programming in QBasic and Pascal and computer hardware repair.  Also assisted other teachers with pedagogy, assignment design, and lecture skills.

o   Assisted Savusavu Rotary Club with computer repairs and maintenance at area school labs.

o   Aided Rotarian John Noell in installing Community Computer Centre in Multi-Ethnic Center, Savusavu Fiji—now providing free computer use for the public.

Working on IUB New Horizons grant for Summer of 2006 and Spring of 2007 and NEH Startup grant Aug 2007-present.  Assisted in composition of two awarded grant proposals.  Duties include designing and programming a formal ontology for the domain of philosophy and assisting with implementation of automated information retrieval tools for the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
